Smocking > Basic Stitches > Cable Smocking Stitch (straight)

  • Does not stretch easily
  • Is a firm stitch
  • Is used as a border row in many smocking designs
  • Is used in picture smocking
  • Is used for backsmocking
  • Keep the pleats aligned - acts as an anchor row

Instructions

  1. Start by bringing the needle up to the left of the first pleat.
  2. With thread down, pick up the second pleat, inserting the
    needle from right to left.
This is called a down cable.
Tighten the stitch by giving a gentle tug upward as you
    finish the stitch.
  3. With thread up, pick up the third pleat, inserting the needle
from right to left at the same leve as before.
This is called an up cable.
Tighten the stitch by giving a gentle tug downpward as you
    finish the stitch.
  4. Continue the row alternating up and down cables.

General Tips

  • Use your needle to align uneven stitches by pushing them into shape.
  • Always keep your needle parallel to the gathering row and perpendicular to the pleats.
  • Give a gentle tug upward as you finish the stitch.
  • Avoid ending off and joining on in the center of the row, as this
usually shows as an uneven stitch. (Use a long piece of thread).
  • Untwist your thread by holding the fabric up and letting the
    needle hang down freely.
  • Try to keep the depth (bite) of your stitches the same.
