Smocking > Basic Stitches > Diamond Smocking Stitch (traveling/zigzag)

  • Is a very loose stitches
  • Always pick up the next pleat with each stitch
  • Is worked between three gathering threads
  • Is like a cable stitch only the up cable is just below the upper gathering thread and the down cable is just above the lower gathering thread
  • Is created by making a mirror image of your first row of wave stitches
  • Is good for beaded smocking especially if you use the 'rod' beads

Instructions

  1. Begin with an up cable, just below the top gathering thread.
  2. With the thread above the needle, sew the next pleat at the
    gathering thread below.
  3. Change the thread position to above the needle and sew the
next pleat, at the same level, to make a down cable stitch
    at the gathering thread.
  4. Keep the thread below the needle, sew the next pleat in the
    gathering row above.
  5. With the thread below the needle make another down cable.
  6. Complete the row.
  7. Now start a new row just above the third gathering thread,
sew a down cable. This should mirror the first cable in point '1'
  8. With the thread below the needle, sew the next pleat at the
gathering thread above (the second gathering thread).
  9. Change the thread position to above the needle and sew the
next pleat, at the same level, to make an up cable stitch at
the gathering thread (the second gathering thread).
This should meet the down cable of the row above.
  10. Keep the thread above the needle, sew the next pleat in the
gathering row below (third gathering thread).
  11. With the thread below the needle make another down cable
    at the third gathering thread.
  12. Complete the row.

General Tips

  • Use your needle to align uneven stitches by pushing them into shape.
  • Always keep your needle parallel to the gathering row and perpendicular to the pleats.
  • Give a gentle tug upward as you finish the stitch.
  • Avoid ending off and joining on in the center of the row, as this
usually shows as an uneven stitch. (Use a long piece of thread).
  • Untwist your thread by holding the fabric up and letting the
    needle hang down freely.
  • Try to keep the depth (bite) of your stitches the same.
