Smocking > Basic Stitches > Rope Smocking Stitch (straight)

  • Has very little stretch
  • Is a firm stitch
  • Good for first row of round yoke garments
  • Particularly good for heirloom garments using 3-4 threads
  • Best using the same colour thread for both rows

Instructions

  1. Start first row by bringing the needle up to the left of the first pleat.
  2. With thread down, pick up the second pleat, inserting the
    needle from right to left.
  3. Keep thread down, pick up the next pleat.
  4. Give a gentle upward tug as you finish each stitch.
  5. Keep your tension constant and complete the row.
  6. This is a row of stem stitch.
  7. Start the second row by bringing the needle up to the left of
the first pleat directly above the first row.
  8. With thread down, pick up the second pleat, inserting the
    needle from right to left.
  9. Keep thread down, pick up the next pleat.
  10. Give a gentle downward tug as you finish each stitch.
  11. Keep your tension constant and complete the row.
  12. This is a row of stem stitch.

General Tips

  • Use your needle to align uneven stitches by pushing them into shape.
  • Always keep your needle parallel to the gathering row and perpendicular to the pleats.
  • Give a gentle tug upward as you finish the stitch.
  • Avoid ending off and joining on in the center of the row, as this
usually shows as an uneven stitch. (Use a long piece of thread).
  • Untwist your thread by holding the fabric up and letting the
    needle hang down freely.
  • Try to keep the depth (bite) of your stitches the same.
