Smocking > Basic Stitches > Two Step Trellis Smocking Stitch (traveling/zigzag)

  • Is an elastic stitch
  • Is worked between gathering threads
  • Is like an outline or stem stitch
  • Uses an up or down cable when changing direction

Instructions

  1. Make up cable stitch just below the top gathering thread by pick up the second pleat at the same level.
  2. Keep the thread above the needle, sew into the next pleat (pleat 3), one quarter of the way down between the first and second gathering rows.
  3. Sew the 4th pleat at the 'halfway mark', keep thread above the needle.
  4. Change thread to below the needle and keeping needle at the same level (the 'halfway mark'), make a down cable in the next (5th) pleat.
  5. Now sew into the next pleat (6th) at the ¼ mark below the top gathering thread.
  6. Sew pleat7 keeping the thread below the needle just below the top gathering thread.
  7. Change the thread to above the needle and make an up cable into the next pleat.
  8. Complete the row.

General Tips

  • Use your needle to align uneven stitches by pushing them into shape.
  • Always keep your needle parallel to the gathering row and perpendicular to the pleats.
  • Give a gentle tug upward as you finish the stitch.
  • Avoid ending off and joining on in the center of the row, as this
usually shows as an uneven stitch. (Use a long piece of thread).
  • Untwist your thread by holding the fabric up and letting the
    needle hang down freely.
  • Try to keep the depth (bite) of your stitches the same.
